Core aeration allows air, water, and nutrients to get down to the roots easier, similar to repotting a plant when the roots become constricted. Most lawns do not require core aeration every year. However, it can be beneficial when the soil is compacted and drainage is an issue (clay soils) and/or when thatch is excessive (½ inch or more).

When attempting to reduce thatch in a lawn, core aeration is a much less abrasive alternative to dethatching. The core of soil that is overturned contains bacteria that the lawn uses to naturally eat away at thatch build-up.
